On Substack
How to find your Substack URL (and share it everywhere)
TL;DR: Your Substack URL is usually https://yourname.substack.com. That is your publication, where people read and subscribe. Your profile has a second address, https://substack.com/@yourname. Share the publication when you want subscribers.
What is my Substack URL?
There are two, and they do different jobs. To find the first, open your publication’s home page and copy the address bar. To find the second, open your profile and read the handle. If you connected your own domain, that domain is your publication URL.
The publication URL is https://yourname.substack.com. The part before .substack.com is your subdomain. You picked it when you made the publication. This is the address where your posts live and where a reader taps Subscribe. If you paid Substack to use a domain you own, the publication answers at that domain instead.
The profile URL is https://substack.com/@yourname. Your handle sets this address, as Substack’s guide to handles explains. The profile shows your posts, your Notes, and what you read. People follow you there.

How to find your Substack URL
Step 1. Sign in at substack.com.
Step 2. Open the Dashboard. Substack’s desktop guide calls it the graph icon above your profile picture on Home.
Step 3. Open Settings. Substack writes that page as yoursubdomain.substack.com/publish/settings.
Step 4. Read the address bar. The word before .substack.com is your subdomain. Drop /publish/settings and that is the publication URL to share.
On a phone, open your publication in a browser and copy the address the same way. If a custom domain is connected, the address bar shows that domain.
How to find and share your Substack profile link
Open your profile and click Edit profile. Substack’s publishing guide says you can change your name, handle, and bio there. Your profile link is substack.com/@ followed by that handle, as the handles guide explains.
If you do not have a handle yet, set one on that same screen. Then copy https://substack.com/@yourname with your own handle and paste it wherever you want people to follow you.
Changing the handle changes the profile URL. After you change it, update any place that still uses the old @handle.
Which one to share where
Share the publication URL when you want subscribers. It opens your posts with the Subscribe button on top. Use it in an email signature, at the end of a talk, or on a podcast page.
Share the profile URL when you want followers on Substack itself. It suits Notes and other Substack writers who want to mention you.
| Where | Paste this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletter sign-up ask | Publication URL | Subscribe is right there |
| Notes and Substack mentions | Profile URL | People follow you on Substack |
| A bio with one link slot | Your Page URL | Holds Substack and everything else |
Put Substack in your link in bio, next to your other links
Instagram and X give you one website slot. If Substack is the only place you want people to go, paste the publication URL there and stop.
If readers also need your site, a shop you already run, or other profiles, make one page and paste that instead. On Page, add Substack to your page by pasting the URL. A profile URL can show as an icon. A single post can be a button you title. Subscribing still happens on Substack.
Then paste the published page, such as https://yourspage.com/yourname, into the Instagram and X website fields. Substack’s Edit profile also takes website links, so the same page can sit on your Substack profile. Steps for each app are on the link in bio page, the Instagram note, and the X note.
A tap on the Substack block counts as a click in your report. It is not a subscriber. Substack’s dashboard is where subscribers are counted. Building the page is free with no card. Publishing is on pricing. When you are ready, put Substack and everything else on one page.

Changing your Substack URL
The subdomain is under Settings, in the Danger Zone section, as Change subdomain. Substack says it must be 4 to 32 letters and numbers, and that a plain change breaks every existing link. There is also Change subdomain without breaking links, which redirects old links and works once. See how to change your subdomain.
A custom domain is a separate step. Substack charges a one-time $50 fee, you must already own the domain, and it suggests a www address. See Substack’s custom domain setup. The profile URL changes only when you change the handle, covered in the handles guide.
Questions
What is my Substack URL?
Usually https://yourname.substack.com, where yourname is the subdomain you picked. That is your publication. If you connected a domain you own, the publication URL is that domain. Your profile has its own address, https://substack.com/@yourname.
What’s the difference between my Substack profile and publication link?
The publication link opens your posts and the Subscribe button. The profile link, substack.com/@handle, opens your profile with posts, Notes, and what you read, where people follow you. Share the publication when you want subscribers.
Can I change my Substack URL?
Yes. Change the subdomain under Settings, in the Danger Zone, with Change subdomain. A plain change breaks old links. Change subdomain without breaking links redirects them, and Substack allows it once. Change the profile URL by editing your handle at substack.com/settings.
Can I use a custom domain for Substack?
Yes, through Substack. It charges a one-time $50 fee, you must own the domain already, and Substack does not sell domains. Its help recommends a subdomain such as www.yourdomain.com.
How do I add Substack to my Instagram bio with my other links?
Instagram has one website slot. Add your Substack URL and your other links to one page, publish it, and paste its address, such as https://yourspage.com/yourname, into that slot. Readers tap through to Substack to subscribe.
